Scotland Students gained a deserved second place in the Student Rugby League 4 Nations Championship, held in Manchester during the week leading up to Easter and including the Easter weekend.
The first match on Monday 10th April against England was lost 30-10, with a very heavy penalty count against Scotland, this was to prove very costly as Scotland played very well in long spells during the game with team gelling well, this was particularly pleasing as two forewards dropped out, one a few days before the event and one the night before we were due to meet up.
Scotlands points were, Tries by David Birchall and Richy Hawkyard, Goal Barry Earl.
The second game on Thursday 13th April against Wales proved to be a very frustrating affair with the touch judge dissallowing two tries under the posts, the score was 18 each with Wales coming off the pitch incredibly pleased and feeling very fortunate,as we played very well and dominated the game in attack and defense, with the strange decisions and a lucky bounce following a poor kick, allowing Wales to catch up.
Tries by Rob Sloman, James Morrow, Stuart Dunbar, Goals Barry Earl.
The next game on Sunday 16th April against Ireland was won 18-10, it should have been a higher score but one or two to many passes with the try line beckoning alowed Ireland back into the game.
Tries by Chris Fletcher, Ruchy Hawkyard, Ryan Black, Goals by Barry Earl.
Following this a Celtic Nations Squad to play England was announced with 7 Irish players, 7 Welsh players and 5 Scots selected, from this the Great Britain side to tour down under will be selected. Congratulations to the Scots selected, David Lynn, Stuart Dunbar, David Birchall, James Morrow and Richy Hawkyard, we feel that a few more Scots should have been in this squad as we did finish second.
