Liverpool v West Ham Match Preview
By Betting Zone March 5 2008
Liverpool entertain West Ham United in a fascinating Premier League showdown on Wednesday night. Much is at stake for the home side as political machinations off the field continue to dominate the Red half of Merseyside, namely fourth spot in the Premier League...

Across the whitewash, their cut and thrust with Everton for that coveted fourth spot in the league is going to be one of the main features on the run-in up to the end of the season and Liverpool will have the chance to re-take pole position if they win this game in hand.

Rafa Benitez's men have not lost in the league since a 1-0 reverse at the Hammers at the end of January but an embarrassing 2-1 exit in the FA Cup to Barnsley and a rather unconvincing 3-2 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield have made them certainly look vulnerable.

Captain Steven Gerrard has felt the need to come out this week after Sunday's 3-1 victory at Bolton and issue a rallying cry to the troops.

He thinks that his side can now go on a winning run until the end of the season - starting here.

But with their season characterized so much by baffling Jekyll and Hyde performances you just wonder how long it will be before the wheels come off once again.

They should certainly have an edge over the Irons mentally with the visitors still reeling from a 4-0 home drubbing at the hands of Chelsea.

Boss Alan Curbishley has even said that his side could take some time to get over that performance as they continue to hover in mid-table.

A loss here would surely end any outside hopes of getting into the UEFA Cup, leaving them with little more than pride to play for until the end of the campaign.

Curbishley gives the same side a chance to make amends for Saturday's defeat and perhaps hasten the healing process.

You can get 8/1 about them notching the double over Liverpool, perhaps not too ridiculous if the home side decide to slip into one of their flakey moods.

But Benitez has stressed how important winning this game in hand will be and I do just have a feeling that the Liverpool capable of tearing into any side will turn up and perform.

Back them to have a comfortable evening giving up one goal on the handicap at 6/4 with Bet365.
